Chapter I
The Divine Order
At Sinai — Exodus 25
"And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it."
Exodus 25:8-9
High atop Sinai, God revealed to Moses the heavenly pattern. The Tabernacle (in Hebrew Mishkan — "dwelling") was no human invention, but the shadow of heavenly things (Heb 8:5). Every curtain, every vessel, every measurement was dictated by God Himself. It was the first time, since Eden, that the Creator proposed to dwell among men.

Chapter II.1
Outer Covering
Tahash Skins — Exodus 26:14
"And thou shalt make a covering for the tent of rams' skins dyed red, and a covering above of badgers' skins."
Exodus 26:14
The outermost layer was the most durable: thick badger (or seal, by tradition) hides. Its appearance was sober and unassuming — anyone passing through the desert saw only a dark tent, with no hint of the glory within. It was the face the world saw: opaque, simple, with no apparent beauty.

Chapter II.2
Red Ram Skins
Crimson of Sacrifice — Exodus 26:14
"And thou shalt make a covering for the tent of rams' skins dyed red..."
Exodus 26:14
Beneath the outer layer, rams' skins dyed red covered the tabernacle. The red points directly to sacrificial blood — the ram substituted Isaac (Gen 22:13), and Christ would be the definitive Lamb. This layer spoke of redemption and atonement hidden beneath the surface.
Layer 3 of 4 — Blood of redemption
Chapter II.3
Goat Hair Curtains
Tent of Meeting — Exodus 26:7
"And thou shalt make curtains of goats' hair to be a covering upon the tabernacle: eleven curtains shalt thou make."
Exodus 26:7
Eleven goat-hair curtains formed the "tent" itself (in Hebrew, ohel), a robust layer against sun and rain. The goat was offered on the Day of Atonement as the sin-bearing scapegoat (Lev 16). This layer pointed to the covering of sin — the cloak that hides guilt before God.
Layer 2 of 4 — Covering of sin
Chapter II.4
Fine Linen with Cherubim
The Inner Glory — Exodus 26:1
"Moreover thou shalt make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet: with cherubims of cunning work shalt thou make them."
Exodus 26:1
The innermost layer — seen only by the priests — was the most beautiful: fine white linen embroidered with blue, purple, and scarlet threads, with cherubim woven in. It was the "heaven" of the tabernacle: the glory hidden behind outward appearances. As in Christ: "we beheld his glory" (John 1:14), the glory few saw beyond the humble flesh.
Layer 1 of 4 — Glory hidden from eyes
Chapter III
The Court
Fine Linen Curtains — Exodus 27
"And thou shalt make the court of the tabernacle... hangings for the court of fine twined linen of an hundred cubits long... and the twenty pillars thereof and their twenty sockets shall be of brass."
Exodus 27:9-10
The court measured about 50×25 meters (100×50 cubits), enclosed by white fine-linen curtains 5 cubits tall (~2.3m). Sixty acacia pillars, with bronze bases and silver capitals, supported the hangings. The white linen symbolized the holiness of God — a wall of purity separating the sanctuary from the profane world. Entry was only from the east.

Chapter IV
Bronze Altar
Blood of Atonement — Exodus 27
"And thou shalt make an altar of shittim wood, five cubits long... and thou shalt overlay it with brass. And thou shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof."
Exodus 27:1-2
Just past the entrance, at the center of the court, stood the altar of burnt offering — square, about 2.3m on each side and 1.4m high, overlaid with bronze. Here blood was poured out for sin: lambs, oxen, goats. Without that altar, none could draw near to God. It was the figure of Calvary: "without shedding of blood is no remission" (Heb 9:22).
Lev 17:11 — "the life of the flesh is in the blood"
Chapter V
Bronze Laver
Cleansing of the Priests — Exodus 30
"Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar... For Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat."
Exodus 30:18-19
Between the altar of blood and the tent stood the laver (Hebrew kiyor). Made from the bronze of the mirrors of the women who served at the door (Ex 38:8), there the priests washed their hands and feet before entering the tent — on pain of death. The sacrifice cleanses our position; the Word cleanses our walk (Eph 5:26). Without this second washing, there is no communion.
Hebrews 10:22 — "our bodies washed with pure water"
Chapter VI
The Holy Place
Table, Lampstand and Incense — Exodus 26
"And thou shalt set the table without the vail, and the candlestick over against the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south: and thou shalt put the table on the north side."
Exodus 26:35
Passing through the door of the tent, the priest entered the Holy Place. Three pieces of furniture awaited him: to the north, the Table of Showbread (12 loaves, communion with the tribes); to the south, the Lampstand of pure gold (Menorah, 7 branches, the only light of the room); and before the veil, the Altar of Incense (continual intercession, prayer rising to God). All of gold. All beneath the light of the lampstand.
Revelation 1:12 — Christ in the midst of the lampstands
Chapter VI.1
The Golden Lampstand
Menorah — Exodus 25:31-40
"And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten work shall the candlestick be made... and six branches shall come out of the sides of it; three branches of the candlestick out of the one side, and three branches of the candlestick out of the other side."
Exodus 25:31-32
Hammered from a single piece of pure gold (about 34 kg), the Menorah had seven lamps — the only light of the Holy Place. Without it, total darkness. Its branches adorned with buds, blossoms, and almond cups pointed to the tree of life and to the One who would say: "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12). The priests kept it burning from evening to morning with pure olive oil.
Revelation 1:12 — Christ among the lampstands
Chapter VI.2
Table of Showbread
Bread of the Presence — Exodus 25:23-30
"Thou shalt also make a table of shittim wood... and thou shalt overlay it with pure gold. And thou shalt set upon the table shewbread before me alway."
Exodus 25:23,30
On the acacia table overlaid with gold rested 12 loaves — one for each tribe of Israel — stacked in two rows. Replaced weekly on the Sabbath, the old ones were eaten only by the priests in a holy place (Lev 24:5-9). Bread = presence, communion, covenant. Christ: "I am the bread of life" (John 6:35). The table was God's continuous invitation to feast with his people, symbol of the marriage supper of the Lamb.
John 6:35 — "I am the bread of life"
Chapter VI.3
Altar of Incense
Prayer that Rises — Exodus 30:1-10
"And thou shalt make an altar to burn incense upon: of shittim wood shalt thou make it... And Aaron shall burn thereon sweet incense every morning... a perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations."
Exodus 30:1,7-8
In front of the veil, the small acacia altar overlaid with gold burned incense morning and evening — aromatic smoke rising as continuous prayer before God. The sacred formula (stacte, onycha, galbanum, pure frankincense — Ex 30:34) was forbidden for profane use. David saw prophetically: "Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense" (Ps 141:2). In Revelation 8:3-4, angels offer incense with the prayers of the saints on the golden altar in heaven.
Psalm 141:2 — "Let my prayer rise as incense"
Chapter VII
The Veil
Blue, Purple and Scarlet — Exodus 26
"And thou shalt make a vail of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen of cunning work: with cherubims shall it be made. And the vail shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy."
Exodus 26:31,33
Between the Holy Place and the Most Holy hung a veil woven with three royal colors: blue (heaven), purple (royalty), scarlet (blood). Embroidered cherubim guarded it, as at Eden. That curtain spoke one terrible and loving word: thus far, and no further. Only the high priest entered — once a year, with blood, and trembling.
Matthew 27:51 — "rent in twain from the top to the bottom"
Chapter VIII
The Ark of the Covenant
The Throne between the Cherubim — Exodus 25
"And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel."
Exodus 25:22
At the heart of the Most Holy rested the Ark: a chest of acacia overlaid with pure gold, containing the Tablets of the Law, the jar of manna, and Aaron's rod that budded. Upon it, the Mercy Seat — one piece of gold with two cherubim. Between them, the Shekinah: the visible glory of God. It was the only earthly throne of the Lord of Hosts.
Hebrews 9:4-5 — "the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold"
Chapter IX
Christ Fulfilled
The True Tabernacle — Hebrews 9
"And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt (literally: tabernacled) among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."
John 1:14
Every detail of the Tabernacle pointed to Christ. He is the Door (Jn 10:9), the Altar (Heb 13:10), the Lamb (Jn 1:29), the High Priest (Heb 4:14), the Bread of Life (Jn 6:35), the Light of the World (Jn 8:12), and the Way to the Father (Jn 14:6). When He died, the veil was rent. The Mishkan of cloth fulfilled its role — now the dwelling of God is the very body of the Son, and through Him, in us (1 Cor 3:16).
Hebrews 10:19-20 — "boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus"

The Tabernacle is a figure of Christ

Every curtain, every vessel, every drop of blood shed in the Tabernacle pointed to the Lamb of God. When Christ cried "It is finished," the veil of the Temple was rent from top to bottom: the way to the Most Holy was opened forever. Today, God no longer dwells in tents made by human hands — He dwells in Christ, and through Christ, in us. Enter with confidence, by the blood of Jesus.
